Being One with Nature in Ateneo
Saturday, January 14, 2012   0 ♣

Anyone who had been to Ateneo would definitely notice one dominant thing: tall, lush trees surround the campus. Trees play a huge role in the area; not only does these give the university a picturesque scenery, but also a sense of safety and security. During the rainy season, trees shade us from large droplets of rain. Over the summer, these trees protect us from the harmful rays of the sun – the Ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause skin cancer.

But there is a lot more to it than that. Every time I walk around the school grounds, especially early in the morning (6:30-7:00 am), tranquility and relaxation wash over me. Aside from the sun kissing the trees’ leaves and the wind dancing with the branches, what I love the most is the fact that I get to study peacefully and think thoroughly whenever I sit on one of the cool, gray, stone benches placed under the trees. More often than not, I even feel the trees speak to me – as if to say, “Even when you are alone at this moment, you are not. I am here.” This gives me a sense of solitary comfort instead of loneliness. And then sometimes I would think, I wonder how many happy smiles, bitter tears, relieved faces, stressed beings, romantic scenes and painful break-ups have these trees seen over the years. People, places and events change in the Ateneo; yet these trees remain faithful over time – serving as a friend and protector to all.

The simple joy of being one with nature is an experience one should not take for granted. Whenever we are busy and stressed with our hectic schedules due to hell week (or month for that matter), why not take the time to pause and appreciate for a moment these beautiful trees around us? I guarantee that you will find solace and serenity in them.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

The trees witness to the opening of Ateneo Fair 2012!
