Math: Friend or Foe?
Friday, January 27, 2012 0 ♣ ![]() Algebra, Statistics, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus. It all comes down to one: MATHEMATICS - a friend to some, a foe to many. Have you ever experienced sitting in Math class not understanding a single thing? It's as if your teacher is speaking Japanese, French, German or any foreign language for that matter. You also get an exchange of "What's happening?!", "The hell?!" or "Ansaveh?!" faces with your seatmates as you try to absorb all the writings on the blackboard. Admit it, having Math class is undeniably a torture. Now, where are the simple joys in that? Difficult to find, right? But not impossible. Well, here are the reasons why. First, cliche as it seems, you get to learn new things. Perhaps you think you don't need all these graphs, x's, logarithms, limits and derivatives in real life. But if you look at the bigger picture, Math is indeed a necessity. It teaches us how to analyze deeply and thoroughly; and think critically and logically. Believe it or not, solving the nerve-racking problems is a healthy exercise for the brain. Moreover, if your career in the future is to be a pilot or an engineer, then Math has to become your best friend. Second, there is always a room for improvement. Yes, you might be flunking your Math subject but that does not mean you're going to fail it until the end. It depends on how you deal with the F's and 0's you get. Either you blame your teacher, your classmate, your book; or you choose to be the better person by studying harder and giving it twice the effort. After all, there are no dumb people born in this world, only lazy ones. And last but not the least, there is the simple joy of those spontaneous Eureka! moments. It's that split second when the lesson suddenly makes sense to you that you already feel like a genius. You go "Ahhhhhh" not for the sake of pretense but you actually really understand the whole concept. Another instance is when you thought you'll get an F but you got a C+ or even a B or B+ instead. In the end, Math can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It's your choice how you deal and cope with it. Either you sulk and rant endlessly or accept and survive the tough challenge. Right now, you might be thinking, "easy to say but hard to do." Well, friend, it's all about perspective. ![]() Labels: Math, simple joys, torture |
