Misa de Gallo : The Awaiting of the Saviour’s Birth
Friday, December 23, 2011   0 ♣

Misa de Gallo is one of the highlights of my life every year. I wait for it to come at the start of the year. I wish for it to end during the first day. I long for it to continue during the last day. Funny, huh? But it is true. Anticipation envelopes me whenever I think of Misa de Gallo. The thought of waking up early in the morning on mid-December excites me. The image of those familiar faces, sitting on the pews and half-awake, that I meet only during Misa de Gallo makes me curious if they are still going to attend the next day or just stay in bed. The “Hi! Good morning!”s and “See you tomorrow!”s of everyone I meet, a friend or not, make me excited for that day even more.

The hardest part is when the day, December 16, and the following days, December 17-24, come. To wake up at 4 in the morning during the Christmas break is very challenging. Christmas break mode, sleep mode, and all the modes one can think of that are incorporated with being lazy are what encapsulate my being. Trust me; it is really hard to w
ake up that early! Nevertheless, what motivates me to leave my comfortable bed are the memories of those days when I just sit back and wait for the Misa de Gallo, the friends that I will meet, and the Eucharist itself. It is always best to start the day with God, meditating on His word and thinking on how it
affects our life. What is next after the Eucharist, though? Chat time with friends, of course! It is fun to chat with people whom you know share the same sleepiness that you have!

After what seems like a month of waking up early, Misa de Gallo ends like a bubble being popped. When this bubble pops, abundant and wondrous and amazing things are revealed. When this bubble pops, the most awaited time of the year is celebrated. C
hristmas time, the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, is the day a person prepares for during Misa de Gallo.

What joys are found in waking up for Misa de Gallo? Pretty hard question huh! Well, aside from seeing familiar faces, chatting with friends, and greetings of the people, the best thing one can feel is the joy of being in God’s presence. The joy of participating in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist that rejuvenates a person and the joy of realizing that Christmas day is about to come. I therefore conclude that, waking up early for God is not that bad after all!!! Yes, one may feel sleepy and lazy. But thinking about the simple joys one can experience tops it all!

Go and share the simple joys! Don’t worry! It’s not too late! One more Misa de Gallo! If you're not able to attend, there is still next year! Experience it and enjoy the SIMPLE JOYS IN LIFE! I wish you a Merry Christmas! God Bless!!
